Lengthy police pursuit ends in Land Park arrest

SACRAMENTO - A police pursuit and subsequent search for a suspected car thief spanned multiple areas, several roadways and nearly two hours Wednesday morning.

Sacramento police said they located an individual suspected of driving a stolen Cadillac near X Street and 15th Street shortly before 4 a.m. Officers attempted to stop the person but the driver fled, leading police on a pursuit up to Cal Expo and then south into the Land Park area where the individual ditched the car and fled on foot.

Officers set up a perimeter around Land Park while searching for the suspected thief who was apprehended in the Land Park golf course around 5:45 a.m., said police.

Local mall steps up security for Black Friday

SACRAMENTO, CA - Security officials at Arden Fair have stepped up patrols to help keep shoppers safe during the holiday season.

Nearly 100,000 shoppers are expected to visit Sacramento's largest mall on Black Friday. Stores will open at midnight Thanksgiving Day, with crowds lining up hours ahead of time for extra savings and door-buster deals.

Macerich, the company which manages Arden Fair, has invested nearly $2 mil. in security upgrades at the property in recent years.

"We've got a state of the art camera system, and we've got 167 cameras," says Steve Reed, Arden Fair security manager. "We're going to be adding 17 more (184 high-def cameras total), they capture everything on the property."

Reed says the cameras produce high-resolution digital video, which allows security officers to clearly make out everything from tattoos to license plates.

'Roaming Rapist' suspect arrested in Isleton

SACRAMENTO, CA - The 14-year search for the man known as the "Roaming Rapist" ended Friday morning with the arrest of Dereck Sanders at a home in Isleton.

Sanders, 39, was taken into custody without incident and charged with a series of nine sexual assaults involving 10 women that took place in the city and county of Sacramento between 1998 and 2003.

DNA samples from the sexual assaults all pointed to one man, but investigators were unable to identify the man until they conducted a so-called "familial" search, which ended with a hit on Sanders' older brother, Ladell.

Ladell Sanders' DNA is in the criminal database from earlier convictions. 

Ladell Sanders, 42, is currently in the Sacramento County Jail awaiting trial on separate sexual assault charges.

After linking the "Roaming Rapist" series to a relative of Ladell Sanders, investigators began focusing on Dereck Sanders.

Sacramento man pleads to child porn charge

SACRAMENTO, CA - A Sacramento man faces a prison sentence of five to 20 years after pleading guilty to receiving child pornography.

Martinez police identified 66-year-old Alan Irwin Burnor when they observed his computer was offering child pornography via an online file sharing service and they could download child porn files from it, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Eastern District of California. The Sacramento Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force joined the investigation and a warrant was obtained to search Burnor's home.

According to court documents, investigators recovered 100 video files and approximately 465 image files depicting toddlers and children being molested and abused from the suspect's computer. The files had been downloaded between July 23, 2010 and Oct. 16, 2011.

Sentencing for Burnor was set for Jan. 23, 2013.

UPDATE: Father shot by Sacramento teen identified

SACRAMENTO, CA -  It now appears Wednesday's shooting in Rosemont that took the life of a 40-year-old man occurred several hours before the man's 18-year-old son called sheriff's deputies to say he had shot his father.

According to Sgt. Jason Ramos, Daniel Cartwright called the sheriff's department around 10:40 a.m. and informed them he had shot his father, Richard A Cartwright.

Deputies responded to the scene and found Cartwright's father with at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Daniel Cartwright was taken into custody without incident, said Ramos.  He was booked into Sacramento County Jail on a single charge of murder and is being held without bail.

Kody Randall, Daniel Cartwright's friend who also lives in the apartment complex, said the father and son argued a lot.

Man arrested in connection to Sacramento shooting death

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A man was arrested in connection to shooting and killing one man and injuring another at an Arden-Arcade apartment complex early Saturday morning.

Sacramento County Sheriff's Department received a report at 1:30 a.m. early Saturday of a shooting at an apartment complex on the 1600 block of Bell Street.

Sgt. Jason Ramos said when deputies arrived at the scene, they found two men with gunshot wounds.

Ramos said an 18-year-old man was transported to the hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to his upper body. Another man, Rickey Howard, 33, also sustained a gunshot wound to the upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene.

After several witnesses were detained for questioning, detectives learned that there was a party at the apartment when three people got into an fight, which escalated into a shooting.

Sacramento police arrest 2 in $200K State Fair robbery

SACRAMENTO: On Thursday, the Sacramento Police Department made an arrest in a robbery case stemming from 2010.

A Sacramento police report released Friday stated Gene Felder, 34, and Antonio Harvey, 52, were arrested in connection with the armed robbery of employees at a food service company working the California State Fair.

According to the report, Felder and Harvey slipped into the cash room of the food company around 10 p.m. on July 21, 2010. The two masked men then held the employees up at gunpoint and made off with $200,000 in cash.

During the initial investigation of the incident, Harvey, an employee of the food company at the time, called police and claimed he had been kidnapped. However, an investigation into his claim proved it false, leading detectives to focus on him as a suspect in the robbery, per the report.

Detectives were able to link Felder to the crime during their investigation of Harvey, according to the report.
