How To Make The Most of Internships

How To Make The Most of Internships

By Brad Hoffman, CEO and Founder
My Learning Springboard, Inc.

For the past five years, I’ve been working in Human Resources for a Fortune 500 media company focused on Talent Development and Strategic Recruitment.  One of our most important programs, the summer internship program, kicks off tomorrow.  From beginning to end, the summer internship program is a full year effort and includes dozens of executives.  Recruiting starts in October, interviewing takes place January through April, processing occurs in May, the program itself runs from June to August, and then offer decisions are reached by November. The internship program is viewed as a 10-week interview, and the primary goal for the company is to create a talent pipeline... Read More

Be a PACTivist for Urban Gardens

Be a PACTivist for Urban Gardens

Winnie Rubin

When I see the words urban gardening, I think sustainable, food security and local. Urban gardening is the important, and increasingly more necessary, practice of growing, harvesting, and distributing food within city communities. I’m working with two public schools in low-income areas of Jackson, Mississippi to build urban school gardens. There are not many outdoor markets or grocery stores that sell fresh produce there, making urban gardening all the more important!

I think it is crucial that students witness food’s entire growing process so they realize and appreciate that food does not magically appear in pre-packaged containers. Having gardens in urban areas encourages students to choose more wholesome foods over processed convenience snacks that could contribute to obesity... Read More

Calif. to propose new student achievement testing

Calif. to propose new student achievement testing

LOS ANGELES (AP) - California's top education official is expected to unveil a new system of student achievement testing on Tuesday.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson was tasked by the state Legislature last year to revamp the state's bank of standardized tests that measure student progress in English language arts and math and qualify high school students for graduation.

The proposed new testing comes as the state starts phasing in new national curriculum standards known as Common Core State Standards. The emphasis of the new testing will be on critical thinking and problem solving skills that will be aligned with Common Core's focus.

The proposal is the result of six months of meetings by a statewide taskforce that has held meetings around California gathering input from educators.
