On Sunday, December 11th, the Mercer Veterinary Clinic for the Homeless held there fundraiser event, Santa Paws. UC Davis Veterinary students worked hard to raise funds for the Mercer Veterinary Clinic for the Homeless.

The mission for the Mercer Veterinary Clinic for the Homeless is to provide free veterinary care to the pets of Sacramento's homeless.  They are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization run by UC Davis veterinary students.  The Mercer Clinic holds a monthly primary care clinic at Loaves and Fishes, a Sacramento organization which provides an array of services to the homeless.  During the clinic, each animal is thoroughly examined and given preventative medications, vaccinations, prescription medications to treat a variety of illnesses, and evaluated for referral to local veterinary clinics if treatment is beyond the capacity of Mercer Clinic’s resources.   Additionally the Mercer Clinic works to reduce pet overpopulation and requires that all patients are spayed or neutered at a spay/neuter clinic which is also run by the Mercer Clinic.  The Mercer Clinic does not charge for any of its services and pays for referral costs to veterinary clinics as well as for animal alteration.  The Mercer Clinic relies entirely upon donations to fund its services.

Each month, local veterinarians, UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine faculty, and veterinary students treat 100-120 patients and distribute more than 600 pounds of free pet food to clients.  Since 1993, the Mercer Clinic has altered over 1500 animals and was selected as the 1998 recipient of the American Veterinary Medical Association Humane Awards and for the 2005 Sacramento SPCA “Humane-itarian” award.  For more information about the Mercer Clinic and information about how to donate to the organization, please visit: http://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/clubs/mercer.
